At home… I can be intoxicated with beauty and lose my sadness.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
What a funny thing you ask? What's the big deal with having a clean and orderly home? How could that possibly help me find purpose? What's that got to do with anything?
All things of beauty must begin at the beginning. Certainly an artist can create wonderful masterpieces in his studio...but if in his studio he cannot find a paintbrush then his splendid portraits cannot be painted.
Home is where hearts are relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated. It's in our home that we "learn to get in touch with the silence within our self and know that everything in this life has a purpose", stated Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. It takes peace of mind and clarity to recognize and reorder meaningful personal priorities. The more our lives and attention are segmented; the more we need to identify what is truly important in our lives.
Carving out a portion of each day for quiet time, prayer, music, contemplation, reading or personal study can be the very antidote we need to the hectic, ad-filled world we live in. A clean and orderly home can be the very place to find these things. What good would it be to bring the turmoil of the world in and drop it on the floor; only to try to step over it later? Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning, or finding the favorite sweater you thought you'd lost hanging in your closet - right where it should be, even finding the car keys quickly can be an unspoken piece to the harmony needed to balance out the frenzied world, beyond our walls.
When we come from a well loved, place of serenity and safety we can expect to move confidently forward in our day with creativity and peace. We can offer grace and compassion to those we meet who have not a place of respite to return to at day's end. What joy and comfort we can bring to those around us. What room we will have to find our real purpose in life with space for more in abundance!
